Indicator Quantity Does Not Equal Information Quantity
When first introduced to technical analysis, many people like to add moving averages, MACD, RSI, stochastics, and Bollinger Bands to their charts all at once. Seeing multiple indicators pointing upward simultaneously, they assume their judgment has received multi-layered confirmation; seeing indicators contradict each other, they continuously add new tools, hoping to find a clearer answer.
The issue is that many technical indicators are calculated from price, volume, and time. Although their names, formulas, and graphs differ, they may simply be describing the exact same price action in different ways. Moving averages reflect the average direction of price, and the MACD is similarly built upon moving average relationships. Both turning strong at the same time does not necessarily represent two independent pieces of information.
Duplicate Signals Easily Create False Confidence
Suppose gold rallies continuously. Short-term moving averages will slope upward, the MACD may enter strong territory, and the RSI will rise in tandem. On the surface, three indicators support the uptrend, but in reality, they likely stem from the exact same underlying cause: the recent sustained rise in price.
If traders treat these duplicate results as multiple independent confirmations, they are prone to overestimating the reliability of their judgments. Technical analysis research also points out that pattern recognition involves a degree of subjectivity, highlighting the need to employ standardized, testable methods to reduce the bias brought by hindsight explanations.
The More Indicators, the More Contradictions May Arise
Trend indicators are better suited for observing sustained market movements, while oscillators are typically used to evaluate the price's position within a specific range.
When the market is in a distinct upward phase, trend indicators may continue to emit strong signals, while oscillators might already indicate overbought conditions. If traders do not understand the specific questions each indicator is designed to answer, they can easily fall into confusion.
At this juncture, continuing to add indicators usually will not make the conclusion any clearer; instead, it merely expands the room for selective interpretation. Focusing on strong indicators when bullish and switching to weak indicators when bearish results in seeking justification for pre-existing biases rather than forming an objective judgment.
Repeated Parameter Adjustments Can Lead to Overfitting Historical Data
The same indicator can be configured with different parameters. Traders might find that a certain set of parameters performed poorly in the past, so they continuously modify the timeframes until the signals on the historical chart look sufficiently ideal. However, parameters tailored to a specific market phase may not necessarily adapt to subsequent market conditions.
As the number of tested indicators and parameters grows, finding a set of rules that performed exceptionally well historically by sheer chance becomes quite easy. Research on technical rules therefore pays special attention to the issue of "data snooping" to avoid mistaking random historical coincidences for stable market laws.
Effective Combinations Require Each Tool to Perform a Distinct Task
The key to combining indicators is not the quantity, but the division of labor. One indicator can be used to determine the primary direction, another to observe volatility, and these can be combined with price levels and event backdrops for confirmation. Each tool should answer a different question rather than repetitively signaling "up" or "down."
Before using any indicator, a trader must first clarify whether it monitors trends, momentum, volatility, or volume changes, and recognize the market environments in which it is prone to failing. Only by understanding the origins and limitations of an indicator can one avoid mechanically treating color changes as actionable execution commands.
Simple Charts Make It Easier to Test Your Trading Logic
A more complex chart does not translate to more professional analysis. Truly reliable analysis should be able to clearly outline the basis for judgment, invalidation criteria, and exit logic. Reducing repetitive indicators allows traders to more easily identify what exactly they are basing their decisions on, and makes it more convenient to verify whether their rules were strictly executed during post-trade reviews.
The role of technical indicators is to organize price information, not to eliminate market uncertainty. Rather than seeking a scenario where all indicators yield the exact same answer, it is far better to select a small number of distinct, well-understood tools. Being able to explain why a signal appeared is far more critical than stacking more signals.
